Astrology Terms

Basic Astrology Terms for Beginners. You will need a nodding acquaintance with the basics in astrology whether you are a budding astrologer or a newbie at consulting an astrologer for personalized readings. In other words, you need to ‘talk the talk’.

Think fast - What’s your sign?

Give your fine self a gold star if you know what sign to read in the daily Horoscopes. In astrology-speak, the term is sun sign. It is the constellation where the sun was located at your birth moment. Horoscopes consist of bare bones astrology. There are planets, aspects, houses and more to consider.

If you rarely feel in-sync with your sun sign, you may have been born on the cusp. The exact day the sun is shifting to a new realm of influence, i.e. from Aquarius to Pisces, is the called the cusp. Since the time the sun enters a particular sign varies slightly from year to year… Only your astrologer knows for sure…

Each planet has its own energies. For example, Neptune is about sensitivity and creativity; Venus is, of course, the love planet. In astrology terms, the sun and moon are counted as planets.

Each house oversees a specific part of your everyday life. Actually, the 12 houses hold similar energy to that of the 12 signs of the Zodiac. Houses aren’t named, instead they are numbered 1-12.

Aspects are difficult for the beginner to comprehend. The ‘down and dirty’ is that aspects are angles between two planets, culminating in their  ‘angular’ interaction.

Your Ascendant, aka ‘rising sign’ denotes the sign and extent of that sign that was ‘rising on the eastern horizon’, at your birth moment. In essence, your ascendant typifies how you present yourself, or the first impression others make of you.

Each Zodiac sign is associated with one of the four elements – fire, earth, air and water.  You will notice each element carries three Zodiac signs:

  • Fire = Aries, Sagittarius, Leo. Fire signs are passionate and generally selfish.
  • Earth = Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo. No surprise that earth people have deep roots and do not embrace change. They are dependable.
  • Air = Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Air people are free spirits.
  • Water = Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio. Water people enjoy rich inner-lives. The most sensitive sign of the Zodiac, water signs are kinesthetic (feelings) people.

The Zodiac is an illustrative chart, used by astrologers that tracks the path of the sun for a calendar year. It partitions the heavens into 12, 30⁰ sections aka Zodiac signs.

Learning these astrology terms will give you a jump-start. As you progress, just ask your astrologer to explain unfamiliar terms.
